Santa Cristina's Day

Santa Cristina's Day

The next 24th July in Lloret de Mar we celebrate Santa Cristina’s Day, our Saint. It’s for this reason that we briefly want you to explain where does this tradition come from and the legends surrounding this important Day.

Long ago, tradition sais that every year, at Santa Cristina’s Day, the people of Lloret went in procession to Santa Cristina’s hermitage to celebrate the Major Mass, but being the road hard, after passing by difficult paths and rivers full of water, representatives of the town asked permission to authorities to make this procession through the sea. Finally it’s said that they needed to go to Rome to ask for this authorisation and since then, every 24th July we celebrate the procession by sea from Lloret’s beach to Santa Cristina.

Processó-Santa-Cristina

So that, on 24th July at 8.00 hs a.m. you can go to Santa Cristina joint with the people of Lloret, because the different companies of boat cruises take free the passangers, authorities and orchestra to go with the procession. You need to reserve the tickets in advance in the turism office. The same boats will take you back to Lloret when the procession comes back, around noon.

Once at the beach, it’s time to wait for male “s’amorra amorra”. This is nautical race of “llaguts” (small boats propelled by paddles) repeteated since end of s.XIX. Each brotherhood is prepared and as the music sounds, it starts a sprint to touch the sand of Santa Cristina’s beach. This a really celebrated race (specially for the winners). At returning of the procession, we celebrate the women “s’amorra amorra” but backward, direction to Lloret’s beach.

And in the afternoon you can enjoy of another emblematic tradition of Santa Cristina’s Day: the Dance of “almorratxes”. Tells the legend that during years when catalan coast was attacked by Moorish, a Moorish rich character arrived to Lloret, and after attending a traditional “Candle Dance” (from it’s supposed the Dance of almorratxes comes from) fell in love with a Lloret lady and wanted to dance with her. As a prove of his love, he gave an “almorratxa” (a cristal vessel ended in four points) full of perfume. But the lady, prefering to stay with the people of Lloret, runned away from him and threw down the almorratxa, breaking it in a thousand pieces.

dansa de les almorratxes

This is the story behind the dance you can enjoy every 24th and 26th July at 19.30 hs at the Town Hall.

These are some traditions and legends involving the 24th July Day. We invite you to come to Lloret de Mar to enjoy all of them. If you come with the family at Hotel Acapulco we’ll be pleased to inform you of these and other activities during the week of Santa Cristina Day in Lloret de Mar.

We wait for you!
